What is a glucose meter?

A glucometer, also known as a blood glucose meter, is a portable device used to measure the amount of glucose (sugar) present in the blood. It is an essential tool for people with diabetes, as it allows them to monitor their glucose levels on a regular basis and take steps to keep them within a healthy range.

How does a glucometer work?

  1. Obtaining a blood sample: A small drop of blood is needed, which is usually obtained from a finger by pricking it with a disposable lancet.
  2. Applying the sample: The drop of blood is placed on a test strip, which in turn is inserted into the glucometer.
  3. Reading the result: The glucometer analyzes the blood sample and displays the result of the blood glucose measurement on the device’s display.

What is a glucometer used for?

Glucometers are mainly used for:

  • Monitor blood glucose levels: people with diabetes can use a glucometer to measure their glucose levels several times a day, as directed by their doctor. This lets them know if their glucose levels are within the target range and take action if necessary.
  • Adjust treatment: The results of blood glucose measurements can help people with diabetes adjust their treatment, such as insulin dosage or amount of medication.
  • Prevent complications: Good blood glucose control can help prevent or delay diabetes complications, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and blindness.
